Behind The Scenes
Her Best Worst Mistake
Her Best Worst Mistake had its origins in my most recent Blaze novel, Hot Island Nights. Originally I intended for Violet and Martin's story to be the subplot to Elizabeth's romance with Nate, but as I wrote towards the two thirds mark of the book it hit me that I was going to struggle to tell Elizabeth and Nate's story in the allocated word count, let alone do justice to Violet and Martin as well. After some gnashing of teeth, I made the decision to pull the subplot out. At the time, it pained me a great deal, because I so enjoyed playing with Martin and Violet. I loved their spiky relationship, their oil-and-water chemistry. I thought they were perfect for each other. For a while I was quite sulky about not having finished telling their story and having to consign what I had written to the cutting room floor.
Then it occurred to me that I could tell their story separately. I had so many scenes written already, after all. I simply needed to set up the beginning and then find the ending.I was busy with other contracted work, however, so I sat on the idea for a while. When I finally started planning out their story, I figured it was a novella. After all these years, you'd think I'd know myself better. I always write long. Always. By the time I'd gotten to that first night on Violet's couch, I knew this was going to be something more than a novella. As it turns out, it's not quite as long as some of my previous books, but it's close.
I had so much fun writing this book. Ambitious, determined-to-get-ahead Martin may be more than a little uptight, but his heart is in the right place and he understands that in Violet he has met the woman who could make or break his life. It takes Violet a little longer to get with the program, because she has more to lose. But they get there in the end. Thank God.
For those readers who haven't read Hot Island Nights, the story follows Elizabeth to Australia where she meets gorgeous, outrageous, sexy Nate - who also happens to be recovering from major trauma. If you enjoyed Her Best Worst Mistake, I think you'd like Hot Island Nights.
